Chargé d'Affaires Arnold Chacón gives his remarks to guests, July 2, 2009 |
Arnold A. Chacón, Chargé d’Affaires, a.i.
Remarks for the July 4th Reception Me complace mucho

Mike Mandel and Larry Sultan with Prince Felipe, Pricess Letizia and Esperanza Aguirre, Madrid, June
3, 2009 |
American Artists Mike Mandel and Larry Sultan’s Exhibit “Evidence” at the
Official Opening of the International Festival of Photography and Visual Arts
PHotoEspaña 2009
The artists visited Madrid for the official opening of the Festival on June 3
where they had the honor of giving a guided tour of the exhibit to the Spanish
Crown Prince and Princess. The exhibit “Evidence,” featured at the Pabellón
Villanueva of the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid until July 26, is a selection
of the photos published by Mandel and Sultan in a book with the same title in
1977. They are images from US institutional archives that were used as
“evidence” in police and judicial investigations. By selecting the images based
on artistic criteria, the artists gave the photos a different value by depriving
them of their original context. (more)
