Statement by U.S. Ambassador to the EU Rockwell A. Schnabel
March 11, 2004
I was shocked and sickened by this terrible attack on ordinary Spanish citizens. On behalf of President Bush and the American people, I extend sincere condolences to the victims’ families and friends and to all the Spanish people.
Today we stand together with all people of Europe in sorrow, but also with resolve to stop these crimes against humanity. There is no cause that can justify terrorism.
Europe and the United States have worked very hard together since September 11 to fight terrorism in any form, any place. We have a duty to our citizens to protect their lives and property. Through law enforcement cooperation and building up new security measures in transportation, we have come a long way. But today’s tragic incident shows we still have a lot of work to do to stop terrorists and make our societies safer places to live.
