Minister Birulés, my dear friend Iñígo, President of Iberdrola, Chief of Staff of His Royal Highness the Prince of Asturias, President of the University of New Mexico, Members of the Board of Directors of Iberdrola, Ladies and Gentlemen:
It causes me great happiness to attend the signing of the agreement creating the Prince of Asturias Endowed Chair in Information Science and Technology between Iberdrola, represented by its President, Íñigo de Oriol, and the University of New Mexico, represented by its President, William Gordon.
First I want to express my most sincere appreciation to the Prince of Asturias for having lent his name to an endowed chair at the University of New Mexico. His support has gone even further through the enthusiasm he has shown and that has made this dream a reality.
Today, with these signatures, a dream is being made possible owing to the vision, generosity, civic-mindedness and leadership of Iberdrola. Iñigo, my dear friend, I would like to point out that this decision by Iberdrola shows its commitment to the future of education and research, and permanent collaboration between public and private entities in Spain and the United States. This great project has become a reality in truly record time, and I want to publicly thank Mr. Antonio Sáenz de Miera, my relative by marriage, for his decisive contribution.
On more than one occasion, Iñigo, you have told me you have done this not for your own gain, but for your country, Spain. You are a great patriot.
I want to thank Madame Ana Birulés, Minister of Science and Technology for her Ministry’s firm support of this chair.
Finally I would like to thank the University of New Mexico and its President Bill Gordon for their commitment to Spain, that this chair is going to promote to a large extent.
As Ambassador of the United States in Spain, as an American who is proud of his Spanish roots, and as a New Mexican, I have to say that this is an exceptional opportunity for relations between our two countries.
Thank you Iberdrola, a modern company with vision and commitment to the future.
