LEGALIZATION OF DOCUMENTS ISSUED IN SPAIN FOR USE IN THE UNITED STATES

Documents to be used in the U.S.A. should be authenticated by means of the "Apostille", in one of the following ways:

  1. Judicial Documents (including birth, marriage and death certificates, etc):
    Present the original document to the Secretario de Gobierno, Audiencia Territorial, Palacio de Justicia, of the corresponding province, as follows:

  2. Notarized Documents:
    Should be authenticated by means of the "Apostille" following a two-step process:

    • Notary Public: If the person signing a document is not registered at a local notary office, the document must be signed before a notary official. Registered signatures may be authenticated by the office having that signature on file (original documents only).
       

    • "Apostille": (The Hague Convention, Decembre 22, 1978); in force for the United States of America as of October 15, 1981. The "Apostille" is issued by the Honorable Dean of the College of Notaries or a member of his Board of Directors with jurisdiction over the place where the document was notarized, as follows:

  3. Other Documents:
    Apply to the Head of the Central Section of the Ministry of Justice in Madrid, Spain. Once authenticated with the "Apostille", the document is valid for all legal purposes in all of the signatory countries to the Hague Convention.

    Note: As of October 15, 1981, when the Hague Convention entered into force for the United States of America, this Consulate General has not been authorized to authenticate documents.

LEGALIZATION OF SPANISH ORIGINAL ACADEMIC DOCUMENTS FOR USE IN THE U.S.

How to Authenticate Academic Documents:

  • Academic Record (Original): The signature appearing on the documents should be authenticated at the notary public office where that signature is registered.

  • "Apostille" of The Hague:  An "Apostille" from the College of Notaries (in the province where the document was executed) should be placed on an original document after its authentication by a notary public. (See addresses on the other side).

    After the Original Document Has Been Authenticated:

    1. Sworn Translation: The original document, authenticated with the "Apostille", should be translated by a Spanish sworn translator. Please note that U.S. Consulates and Embassies are not permitted to make these translations.

    2. Notary Public: The signature of the translator should be authenticated at the notary public office where the translator has his/her signature registered.

    3. College of Notaries Public: Finally, the notarized translation should be submitted to the appropriate College of Notaries for authentication with the "Apostille".

    True Photocopies of the Original:

    1. Notary Public: Any notary public can authenticate photocopies of Spanish academic records and their corresponding sworn translations. Originals must be submitted for comparison.

    2. College of Notaries Public: If these notarized true copies or their translations need authentication, they should be submitted to the appropriate College of Notaries Public (See paragraph I-b above).

    LEGALIZATION OF DOCUMENTS ISSUED IN THE PRINCIPAT D’ANDORRA FOR USE IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

    Documents to be used in the U.S.A. should be authenticated by means of the "Apostille", as follows:

    Present the original document to the Ministeri de Relacions Exteriors (Ministry of Foreign Relations) of the Principat d’Andorra, so that the "Apostille" can be placed, either by the Ministro de la Presidencia (Ministry of the Presidency), the Ministro de Interior (Ministry of the Interior) or the Ministro de Relacions Exteriors, at the following address:
