12th U.S.- SPAIN forum 2007
Salamanca, June 22-24, 2007
Representatives from the United States-Spain Council and the Fundación Consejo
España-Estados Unidos met June 22-24 at the 12th U.S.-Spain Forum. The Forum,
held in the Colegio Fonseca of the University of Salamanca, counted among its
hosts University of Salamanca Rector José Ramón Alonso. Co-chaired by Jose
Ignacio Goirigolzarri, BBVA, from the Fundación Consejo España-Estados Unidos,
and Ambassador Eduardo Aguirre, representing Senator Mel Martinez on the U.S.
side, this bilateral forum brought together an important number of Americans and
Spaniards, whose relevance in the political, corporate, academic, and scientific
worlds qualify them as representatives of some of the leading sectors of both
countries. The Mayor of Salamanca, Julián Lanzarote Sastre, hosted the opening
dinner in which Secretary of State for Commerce and Tourism Pedro Mejía offered
his remarks.
The Spanish Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Bernardino León and the
Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Emilio T. González opened
the working session of Saturday with a discussion on “The Migration Phenomenon:
Experiences from Spain and the U.S.”.
The second session, “Financing Structures in the U.S.,” received important
perspectives of Francisco Clemente, Finance Director of CINTRA and Thomas
McLoughlin, Head of Public Finance from MBIA Insurance.
“Institutional Strengthening in Latin America” was the subject of the third
session, during which Spanish Secretary of State for Latin America Trinidad
Jimenez and Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Thomas
A. Shannon addressed the group.
An informal meeting of the Forum participants with U.S. university students
resident in Salamanca followed the sessions. The closing dinner, hosted by the
President of the Regional Government of Castilla y León, featured remarks by
Castilla y León’s Treasury Counselor Pilar del Olmo, the Ambassador of Spain in
the U.S Carlos Wentendorp, and U.S. Ambassador Eduardo Aguirre (read
